APPLICATION

Wireless base stations, or cell towers, experience many power outages in which existing back-up batteries are inadequate to prevent a power failure; therefore, unacceptable power failure occur well before the end of the power outages. Base transceiver stations (BTS) are often situated in locations difficult to access and require reliable back up power in case of power outages in order to assure the availability of public communication systems. Energy demand of low power BTS can vary from 2.5kw – 5kw. Figure below shows the typical cell tower configuration.

Challenges

Wireless carriers need a solution to keep their cell towers operating in the event of an extended power outage.

Relying on battery banks only is not practical (need too many of them to cover long outages, takes space, requires more maintenance, etc.).

Current solutions include diesel generators, which come with many shortcomings:

  • Fuel and generators/parts get stolen.
  • Generators require regular maintenance, otherwise they do not start when needed & are prone to breakdowns.
  • Noise and pollution are increasingly viewed as unacceptable, especially in urban environments.
  • Regional laws restrict use of diesel generator.
  • Fuel logistics is a recurring major burden.
  • Diesel generator are very heavy and take up considerable space.

The Solution
Model DMFC 250

The Model DMFC 250 is a liquid fuel cell that operates as a battery charger for a wide variety of stationary applications, including wireless base stations. Refueling infrastructure takes little space and it is inexpensive and safe because the fuel is methanol, a common industrial liquid, which reduces CO2 emissions by up to 60 percent. Depending on customer power requirements, the DMFC 250 rack can be configured with one or two 250 Watt net power modules, and multiple racks can be installed for applications with even higher power requirements, hence replacing the costly/unreliable diesel gensets used today in Telecom Towers.

Challenges

Oil and Gas Industry need a solution to keep their equipment operating 24/7.

Relying on battery banks only is not practical (as batteries needs to be recharged often with reliable power source)

Relying on solar is not practical as solar panels have limited availability during day time only.

Relying on wind turbines is not practical as the power generate for wind turbines is highly depended on the availability of wind.

Current solutions include diesel gensets, which come with many shortcomings:

  • Diesel gensets require frequent maintenance
  • Highly unreliable due to frequent breakdowns
  • Diesel gensets are highly inefficient
  • Diesel gensets are not environmentally friendly (CO2)
  • Many more...

APPLICATION

Our Model T1 or T3 can easily be integrated into data centers, to provide sustainable/reliable power during grid outages. Using fuel cells and batteries as a hybrid solution for any data centers, we can ensure uninterrupted equipment running inside data centers such as servers, computers, network switches, etc. Where UPS/back-up batteries are inadequate to provide reliable power for longer periods of time, with our T1/T3 solution customers do not have to worry about limited power storage.

Fuel cells can generate on demand sustainable power during major power outages. Fuel cells can automatically detect grid outages and start to produce power. So the equipment inside the data centers can continue to operate as normal. Fuel cells are not only provide reliable power but also are environmentally friendly.
